Middle School Art

Cyanotypes

This unit begins with discussion and group activities about positive and negative space. Students learn about the history of cyanotypes as well as the chemical reaction that makes the paper photosensitive. Students then spend a class period outside on a nature walk and they gather items with interesting shapes. Working in groups, they build compositions on the cyanotype paper. As a final project, students each design their own composition on tracing paper.

Self-Portraits

Students made oil pastel self-portraits inspired by Frida Kahlo. They explored their own personal narratives to select three symbols to display in their self-portrait. They learned foundational color theory by applying a color palette with either complementary or analogous colors.
