Disgraced Fate
An artist book offering an iconoclastic translation of Ovid’s love story about Ceyx and Alcyone from his Metamorphoses. The text is letterpress-printed with handset metal Optima type and extracted from eight modern English translations. The book is sewn with a long and link stitch. The imagery is based on fifteenth-century volvelle structures abstracted and obscured through the application of the brush with natural dyes. The sheets of paper are stitched together at the gutter of the page spread creating an impenetrable surface. A glimpse beneath the surface of the center opening illuminates a variety of translations, facilitating a fluid and non-linear close read of the text. The English translations are nested behind the original Latin text. Thin, translucent sheets of handmade overbeaten abaca possess a tempestuous auditory quality. Edition of ten, 2018. 7 x 10 x 1.75 in closed
